In 2025, as Malaysia hosts the ASEAN Summit, the National Art Gallery is proud to present an exhibition showcasing works from its Permanent Collection for the very first time. These works were generously gifted by countries such as Indonesia, Thailand, Singapore and ASEAN +6, namely South Korea, Japan, China and India. These gifted pieces were initially exhibited in a prior international exhibition at the National Art Gallery. They encompass a variety of forms, mediums and sizes, reflecting the creativity of international artists and now forming and integral part of the gallery’s Permanent Collection.
The primary objective of this exhibition is to highlight the enduring impact of cultural diplomacy through art, aligning with ASEAN’s 2025 aspirations to promote unity in diversity. It seeks to foster a united, inclusive and resilient community. The collection of artworks on display symbolises the bonds of friendship and ongoing exchange of cultures, with aligns with ASEAN’s mission to use visual arts as a catalyst for knowledge sharing.
This exhibition celebrates Malaysia’s pivotal role as a cultural and diplomatic hub in the region, further solidifying its position as the host nation for ASEAN. Through this initiative, it is hoped that shared values, artistic exchange and historical connections that unite these countries will be brought to the forefront. The contributions of these gifted works enrich the exhibition narrative, underscoring the diverse yet interconnected art traditions that coexist with contemporary practices across the region.
